As the German people began to see that their government could not sustain itself, they sought a new form of leadership. The Nazi party began to gain great popularity among the German people. President Hindenburg appointed von Schleicher to be chancellor. Because von Schleicher lacked support of the Germans, Adolf Hitler demanded to be made chancellor. On January 30th, 1933, Hitler was sworn in as chancellor, with von Papen as vice-chancellor to oversee the actions of Hitler. After President Von Hindenburg died in 1934, Hitler took over the powers of presidency. The army swore an oath of personal loyalty to Hitler, and his new, official title was "Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor".
